Blue Tit

Occasionally Blue Tits can be confused with the very similar looking Great Tit. What makes the Blue Tit different and easier to recognise is its small rounded head and short stocky neck, with a distinctive black eye stripe and small blue skull cap.

It has bright yellow under plumage with a narrow grey/black stripe on the centre of the breast area

Facts

Blue tits are found in gardens and hedgerows across the UK and Europe, and it even seems that the population is gradually increasing.

You’ll often see these birds at your feeders all year round, and in winter you may see several at a time. That’s because family flocks join up with other tits in order to search for food.

Blue Tits struggle in harsh winter weather, and therefore really benefit from winter bird feeding.

Nesting Habits

Blue tits usually nest in holes in trees, and they’re quite at home in nest boxes too. They’ll defend their nests against intrusions by hissing and biting. Their main rivals for nesting sites are sparrows or great tits.

Nesting materials are typically moss, feathers or hair, and the number of eggs in a clutch can be surprisingly large – typically seven or 8 eggs, and often more. The eggs are laid in April or May.

Food Preferences

The blue tit can be a useful pest controller in your garden, being particularly fond of aphids. However, it will also eat seeds too.

This species will happily eat black oil sunflower seeds, or sunflower hearts, or mixed seed that fill wild bird feeders.

They are experts at most acrobat of positions when feeding and are fantastic to watch.
