Nyjer

Nyjer

Nyjer seed (sometimes called thistle seed) consists of tiny seeds that are the feed of choice for siskins and goldfinches. perfect size for the tiny seeds. There are several tube bird feeders that have ports that can be changed from mixed seed to nyjer seed ports.

There are some nyjer and thistle seed bird feeders that have "upside down" ports. This is particularly advantageous to feeding finches since they are one of the few bird species that has the ability to feed upside down. Upside down feeders allow the finch to alight on the port's perch then turn upside down and eat the nyjer seed from the port hole below the perch.
nyjer seed loses its freshness after six months, so purchase often and in small amounts. Be sure to clean your nyjer seed feeder once every two weeks.

Suet

Suet

Fat provides an excellent source of energy for birds, and is therefore an ideal winter food. Either suet or lard is suitable – but make sure you don’t use cooked fat from roasting tins or dishes. This fat will have meat juices in, and can therefore be a problem for the birds’ feathers.
You can buy pre-prepared suet fat balls, which are quick and convenient – but make sure you remove any nylon mesh that might be a hazard for birds.
If you have the time, you can also make your own – if you mix melted fat with other bird food ingredients you can make your own bird feeding ‘cakes’.
